Meet Laureen
Laureen Franklin, MS, OTR/L, SWC
Laureen is a highly experienced and passionate pediatric occupational therapist with over 24 years of expertise in the field. Laureen began her journey in the healthcare field with a BS in Psychology from the University of Washington in 1997, followed by a BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. During her time as a student, Laureen was handpicked to be part of an interdisciplinary team that received specialized training in Early Intervention. She was also fortunate enough to be accepted as a fieldwork student at Seattle Children's Hospital, where she gained invaluable experience working in a variety of units, including the NICU, acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient. After graduation, Laureen continued her work at Seattle Children's Hospital while also providing her services in a school-based setting.
Following six years of pediatric practice, Laureen pursued an Advanced Master’s in the field of Occupational Therapy to focus on pediatrics. During her time at the University of Washington, she gained more in-depth clinical knowledge by working with high-risk infants and children in the university's specialty clinics. In 2005, she earned a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Medicine - Occupational Therapy Pathway, providing her with the knowledge and expertise to specialize in supporting infants and young children. She also enjoyed owning a pediatric private clinic in Washington during these years.
In addition, Laureen is a published author and has earned the AOTA First Researchers Award with her first publication in 2008 titled "Children with FASD: Problem Behaviors and Sensory Processing."
Throughout her career, Laureen has worked with children in various settings, including schools, non-public schools, children's hospitals, in-home services, and outpatient pediatric settings. While in San Diego, she has enjoyed working in a pediatric private clinic for 12 years. Her dedication and commitment to improving the lives of children have earned her numerous leadership positions, including OT Department Lead within school and clinic settings, OT mentor, Feeding mentor, and Clinical Director at a private pediatric practice.
She is passionate about supporting families and has earned a specialty in feeding within pediatrics, including an advanced practice certificate in Swallowing Assessment/ Evaluation/ Intervention (SWC). Laureen is committed to continuously expanding her knowledge and refining her skills. She has taken numerous courses to augment her expertise and is always eager to learn more. Her extensive experience, specialized knowledge, and SWC certification uniquely position her to support families facing the most complex feeding difficulties in newborns, infants and young children.
As a mother of three, Laureen recognizes the significance of mealtimes for families and is determined to help every child THRIVE. She strongly believes in a team-based approach to support each child and their family, and is committed to working closely with other healthcare professionals to develop personalized treatment plans that cater to each child's distinct needs.
During her free time, Laureen enjoys spending quality time with her loved ones, including her husband and three children. Her family also adores their two dogs and 5-year-old bearded dragon. You can often find her cheering on her children at their sports games or dance performances, exploring the great outdoors, embarking on exciting travels, or getting active with a good workout.
